Virginia spring beauty - Claytonia Virginica -Widely known as a souvenir of spring, these plants hold the highest honor when it comes to early blooming spring wildflowers.
It is a spring-flowering plant native to North America and can be seen in many gardens due to its easily adaptable nature. Its spectrum covers western and southern New England, seeking habitat in wet, deciduous woods, forest outskirts, and meadows. It is a particularly delightful spring ephemeral that fades away in late spring while it tends to fall into dormancy It develops from a tiny, potato-like, consumable subterranean tuber with a sugary, chestnut-like taste. The flowers usually bloom on soothing, warm days, while foggy weather causes them to shut.
When open, they stand upright, but when shut, they slouch downwards. Early to late spring is the time of year when the flowers begin to blossom and remain at their peak for around 1 to 2 months. An enchanting flower aroma fills the air as soon as they bloom. Re-seeding is the primary method by which this wildflower spreads.
Flowering in loose clusters of petite, star-shaped, ivory to pale pink blooms with subtle pink veins, this tuberous perennial is capable of adding a burst of spring to any garden. The flowers are borne on slender stems that possess a set of flat, grass-like, deep green foliage and emerge in the early through late spring months.
These blooms provide a significant supply of pollen and nectar to a diverse scale of pollinators throughout the spring blooming season. Its stem is mild green to a bit reddish-green in color, succulent in texture, with a hairless surface. Its leaves are about 2 to 5 inches long and around ¼ inches in width. Once entirely open, each flower measures approximately 1/3 inches in width and bears five white petals, two green sepals, along with five stamens containing pink anthers.
Perennial wildflowers like this one may grow up to three to six feet tall. Once you grow them in vast quantities, they appear pretty alluring and create an enormous groundcover. It favors dappled sun, wet to moderately dry environments, along fertile, loamy soil with ample organic content.
The splendor of springtime surrounds us as the snow begins to melt and brings with it an array of early spring wildflowers. This plant is one of these early blooming wildflowers that sheds all the cold inside you and warms you inside out. A wide range of pollinators, including bees and butterflies, benefit from this little woodland plant's early blossoming.
