Plants That You Can Grow in Winter Season

Green plants provide scenic beauty that can suit any landscape. This winter, if you plan to redesign your garden and fill it with emerald greens, you can plant a range of wintergreen trees and shrubs.

Wintergreen plants can grow and remain green in the winter season, unlike other plants that tend to die during extreme climatic conditions. There are many varieties of flowering plants, shrubs, and trees that you can plant during winter—

Gaultheria procumbens (Checkerberry) - This plant is found mainly in North America and Canada which is adaptable to the cold winters. It is a shrub that is evergreen and has white or pink-colored flowers which bloom during summers. These are perennial plants and grow up to 10-15 centimeters in height. They are highly dense throughout summers and winters and have dark green foliage. Gaultheria procumbens or checkerberry are highly tolerant to drought, and the soil requires a pH level of 4 – 6.5.

Azaleas: This is another evergreen plant that can be grown with Checkerberry plants, and they can accentuate the beauty of your garden during the winter season. The flowers bloom during spring and are multi-colored. They have almost the same growing conditions as the Checkerberry plant. Azaleas grow in acidic soil, which should be well-drained and with a pH level of 4.5 – 6.0. They can provide an excellent contrast to your checkerberry plant with the fantastic red, pink & white colors.

Bergenia: These are perennial plants as well and can be grown with Gaultheria Procumbens and Azaleas. They have flowers that are shaped like a cone and are generally in several pink shades. They can grow in most soils; however, humus-rich and moist soil are preferred. They grow in extreme temperatures ranging from -35 °F to 115 °F. They can be grown behind Checkerberry plants as their flowers bloom during winters which means Bergenia would show its colorful effect when the Checkerberry plant would not have flowers.

These are a few plants that are available for sale at our exotic nursery. You can plant them in your garden to make it equally appealing in the winter season.
