The Wintergreen Boxwood 6-10" (Buxus sinica var. insularis) is a favorite for ornamental gardeners. This robust cultivar is native to the Korean peninsula and parts of northeastern China. ‘Korean Boxwood’ is another common name for this robust cultivar paying homage to the region in which it is native.

In Korea, it was cultivated to be extremely robust in cold climates. As such, its rich green foliage is maintained year-round, even in harsh winter conditions. If you are located in a northern region, this boxwood has been cultivated to be less prone to browning in the winter time than other boxwoods.

Water Needs: Average

Height: 2–4 ft

It is evergreen and will maintain its dense, rich green, lustrous foliage year-round. Low growing, it reaches about 4 ft in height and has a spread of about 5 ft. The new growth stems have a shiny, greenish-golden color, maturing to woody and robust branches. The flowers are small and creamy-white in color. While they are attractive to pollinators, they hold little ornamental value.

The Wintergreen Boxwood 6-10" is well-known for its ease of shaping. Its compact growth makes it ideal for short hedges, pathway borders, and low-rising topiary specimen for formal gardens.

Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Wintergreen Boxwood Plants 6-10"

It is easy to grow, extremely cold-hardy, and resilient across many climatic conditions. It grows well in moist, well-drained soils. This evergreen is drought tolerant; however, to maintain lush and healthy foliage, it should be watered during dry periods. Mulch this plant yearly to maintain soil moisture. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Plants will grow in the shade, but not as vigorously and with sparser foliage.

It is deer and rabbit resistant; however, it can be susceptible to box sucker, box red spider mites and leaf spot. Pruning encourages new and healthy growth, so be sure to prune after the last frost date so that new growth is not damaged by cold weather. It can be propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings.

How to Grow and Care for Bare Root Shrubs

Bare root shrubs are a budget-friendly and efficient way to plant during the cooler months when they’re dormant. Before planting, soak the roots in water for 3–6 hours to rehydrate them. Choose a site with the appropriate light exposure for the species—most flowering shrubs prefer full to partial sun. Dig a hole wide enough to spread out the roots and deep enough so the crown (where the roots meet the stems) sits level with the soil surface.

Mound a bit of soil at the bottom of the hole, spread the roots over it, and backfill with native soil while gently firming it to remove air pockets. Water deeply after planting to settle the roots. Keep the soil moist but not soggy during the first growing season to encourage healthy establishment.

Mulch around the base (not touching the stems) to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly to remove any broken branches and to shape after the first flush of growth. With minimal care, bare root shrubs will leaf out beautifully and grow into reliable, long-term landscape anchors.
