Lizard's Tail (Saururus cernuus)

Lizard's Tail: Saururus cernuus, or the Lizard's Tail, American Swamp Lily, or Water Dragon, is a fast-growing and water-loving plant. This wetland perennial thrives in almost all contiguous USDA plant hardiness zones.

This North American native species will flourish in high-moisture settings near ponds, swamps, rivers, creeks, ditches, or other places that often have standing water. As long as you find a spot with lots of sunshine and water, it requires almost no additional care after the roots strengthen. Lizard's Tail plants are disease-resistant, pest-resistant, and deer-resistant. They spread by a vigorous underground root system and form lush colonies.

TN Nursery customers add this species around their water features or ponds in no small part due to the pleasant, lemony fragrance.

Where to Use the Lizard's Tail Plant

Lizard's Tail is beautiful in these settings:

  • Water garden or pond
  • Near a water feature, like a fountain that splashes continuously
  • Native species garden
  • Rain garden
  • In a slow-draining area or near a creek on your property.

Use Lizards Tail- Saururus cernuus to Control Soil Erosion

Muddy and wet areas of the yard are often prone to soil erosion. However, the fast-spreading nature and healthy root system of Saurunus cernuus can help you to minimize this problem. Once established, the roots will help improve the soil's structure and hold it in place to offset water erosion damage on your property.

The lizard's tail feature that gives this plant its name is its flower! It has a white plume or feathery appearance that curls into an attractive shape resembling a lizard's tail. They bloom throughout the entire summer season, showing off their intriguing texture.

The flower arises above dark green, triangular to heart-shaped leaves with smooth edges. The leaves have prominent veins and grow approximately six inches long at three inches wide.
