Why buy trees online from TN Nursery

We have grown trees on our Tennessee farm for three generations, since 1959. Buying direct from the grower means fresher trees and lower prices than you'll find at most garden centers.

  • Shipped bare root. Trees ship dormant without heavy soil, which keeps them healthy in transit and keeps shipping costs down. Bare-root trees establish quickly because their roots grow straight into your native soil. Learn more about bare-root trees .

How to choose the right tree

Check your hardiness zone

Every tree has a range of zones where it survives winter. Find your zone, then choose trees rated for it. Our filters let you shop by zone.

Plan for mature size

A young tree looks small, but it will grow. As a guide, plant small trees (under 30 feet) at least 10 feet from your house, medium trees 15 to 20 feet away, and large shade trees 20 to 30 feet or more away. Keep large trees clear of power lines, septic fields and driveways.

Match the tree to the site

Most trees need at least six hours of sun. For low, wet ground, choose river birch , red maple , pin oak , tupelo or sweet bay magnolia . Under power lines, stick to small flowering trees like redbud and dogwood .

Plan for pollination

Many fruit trees, including apples, pears and pawpaws, need a second tree of a compatible variety nearby to produce fruit. Check each product page and plant at least two when needed.

When and how to plant bare-root trees

Bare-root trees are planted while dormant, from late fall through early spring whenever the ground isn't frozen. Planting in fall gives roots extra months to settle in before summer heat. Plant as soon as possible after your tree arrives. If you need to wait a few days, keep the roots moist and the tree in a cool, shaded place.

To plant, soak the roots in water for an hour or two. Dig a hole twice as wide as the roots and just deep enough that the root flare (where the trunk widens at the base) sits at ground level. Spread the roots out, backfill with the original soil, and water deeply. Add 2 to 3 inches of mulch in a wide circle, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk. Water weekly through the first growing season when it doesn't rain. See our full planting instructions .

Tree questions

Is it better to buy bare-root trees?

For most home plantings, yes. Bare-root trees cost less, ship more easily, and often establish faster than potted trees because their roots grow directly into your soil instead of circling in potting mix. The trade-off is timing: they must be planted while dormant, from late fall to early spring.

When is the best time to plant trees?

Fall and early spring are best. Trees planted in fall grow roots through the cool months and are ready to leaf out in spring. Early spring planting, as soon as the ground thaws, works well too, especially in cold zones. Avoid planting in the heat of summer.

What is the fastest growing shade tree?

Tulip tree, red maple, river birch and silver maple are among the fastest growing shade trees we sell, often adding two feet or more a year in good conditions. Browse all of our fast growing trees .

How far from my house should I plant a tree?

Plant small trees at least 10 feet from your house, medium trees 15 to 20 feet away, and large shade trees 20 to 30 feet or more away. Spacing based on mature size protects your foundation, roof and gutters.

What are the best trees to plant in a yard?

It depends on your goal. For shade, red maple, red oak and tulip tree are excellent. For spring color, redbud and dogwood are hard to beat. For fruit, try peach, fig or pawpaw. For fall color, choose sugar maple, red sunset maple or sourwood.

Do fruit trees need a pollinator?

Many do. Apples, pears and pawpaws generally need a second compatible tree nearby to set fruit. Many peaches and figs are self-fruitful and can produce on their own. Check each product page for details.

Can I buy trees in bulk?

Yes. Our tree seedlings are an affordable way to plant many trees at once for windbreaks, reforestation or wildlife habitat. Landscapers and contractors can order through our wholesale nursery .

What are some of the most beautiful trees?

Some of the most admired trees are flowering dogwood, eastern redbud, southern magnolia, weeping cherry and crepe myrtle for their blooms, and sugar maple, sourwood and ginkgo for their fall color.
