Spruce Pine Tree
Spruce Pine Tree: Some call it the Virginia pine tree or Walter’s pine; others call it the spruce pine tree. This American native evergreen species originated in the wood forests along the east coast, from New York state south through Alabama.
They thrive in a range of USDA growing zones, seemingly as unbothered by the southern New England cold as the hot and humid summers of the deep south.
Most who purchase the spruce pine tree from TN Nursery need it for reforestation or to create natural areas. It is a long-lived tree that can survive as long as ninety years.
The spruce pine tree is unconcerned about soil quality and can even flourish in depleted conditions--it will even grow in clay where other trees may fail to thrive.
The Tall, Stately Look of the Spruce Pine Tree
Spruce pine trees are tall. In fact, they can reach a mature height of around seventy feet or more. Some love this tree because it is evergreen, displaying green color even when other trees go dormant for the winter.
The tree bark is a hue between gray and light brown; it sheds from the tree to renew itself; it develops an interesting scaled texture as the tree matures.
The spruce pine produces slightly twisted, dark green needles in pairs. The crown is pyramid-shaped while growing and becomes a slightly-rounded dome when mature. The limbs grow in dark green whorls.
A mature tree drops a proliferation of large, open pine cones up to four inches long. Those who love making crafts and wreaths will often collect the pine cones for use in traditional holiday crafting.
