The Sugar Maple Tree

Sugar Maple Tree

There are billions of tree types in the botanical world. Due to the vast number, they have broadly been categorized depending on their features.

The sugar maple tree is impressive, and I love sugar trees. So, if you are thinking of planting a tree, why not go for a sugar maple tree?

The maple tree is among some of the most loved trees in the USA. Today, this tree represents four states, including New York, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Virginia. As if that's not enough, the maple tree is Canada's national tree.

What makes the maple tree loved by many? Apart from its much-coveted sweet syrup, the maple tree also has an enormous lumber value. Apart from the commercial value, the maple tree has a beautiful look, making it an attractive addition to a garden.

Maple Tree Facts

You probably know about the maple tree as a plant that produces syrup. However, what else do you know about this tree?

The maple tree is a Native American tree used regularly by Native Americans well before the colonialists began maple tree farming. The natives used the indigenous tree for its sweet syrup, which was used for bartering purposes.

Even so, the maple tree is lovely on its right. The majestic tree boasts a dense crown that grows in an oval shape. This makes it an excellent tree to offer you much-needed shade during summer. Apart from the overall shape, the tree grows with dark green leaves that have five identical lobes.

To make it beautiful, the tree is adorned with tiny flowers that are always green. The flowers grow in clusters and always hang downwards from the delicate stems; like any other tree with flowers, the maple tree flowers in mid-April to late May.

Hardy Zones

When it comes to hardiness zones, you can always expect the maple tree to do well in zones 3-8.

Maturity Height

The sugar maple tree can grow to a height between 60 feet to a maximum of 70 feet.

Maturity Width

When it comes to width, the male tree can spread to width if 40 gets to 50 feet on maturity.

Soil Recommendations

It's essential to consider the type of soil to grow the tree. The soil should not only be well-drained but deep as well. Apart from that, the maple tree performs best when grown on slightly alkaline to acidic soil.

Bloom Color

Between April and May, the flowers produce seeds that mature during Autumn. At the same time, the majestic tree gives an impressive fall show, with its leaves turning to bright shades of red and orange.

Growing a Sugar Maple Tree

Like any other tree, the maple tree needs conditions for optimum growth. When it comes to growing one, select a site with a full blare of the sun.

However, if you cannot get the desired site, it's worth noting that the maple tree can also do well in partial sunlight. Nonetheless, the tree should be able to shine on the tree for at least four hours daily.
