Lily of the Valley thrives well in cold climates and is native to multiple continents, including Europe, Asia, and North America.
It belongs to one of the genera in the Asparagus family and is not a true lily. The flowers are delicate and pretty, but the plant is a hardy ground cover that spreads aggressively in any spot planted.
It is commonly planted under tall trees where other plants do not bloom. It is an evergreen plant and survives well without much sun exposure.
The plant usually grows in partial sun, partial shade, or full shade, as a high amount of sun exposure can damage the plant. The occasional sun is good for the plant if you live in a cold climate.
However, it is good to plant it underneath taller trees to save from the harsh sunlight when living in warm areas. This low-maintenance plant can grow in almost all kinds of soil but prefers chalky, organically rich, well-drained soil.
While it grows best in neutral to acidic soil, alkaline soil does not harm the plant. It is an easy-to-maintain plant with low care and requires frequent watering. This plant likes moist soil but does not need to be soggy.
The leaves are green and medium in size. They are between 5 and 10 inches long and up to 5 inches wide in some species. Apart from the pretty light green leaves, the tiny bell-shaped white flowers enhance the beauty of the plant.
They are petite and fragrant, hanging on long stems. The flowers turn orange and red berries in Autumn to attract different birds and other wildlife.
The North American native Convallaria majuscule is a ground cover and low-maintenance shade-grown plant. Various plant varieties are popular globally, with Convallaria majuscule being the most popular in North America.
The cool temperature allows an adequate dormancy period before the plant blooms vigorously. It is well known for its rapid spreading and growth as a ground covering. The rhizomes of the plant can be divided and planted when needed.
The plant does not need fertilizer when growing unless you have impoverished soil. Adding a slow-release granular fertilizer in spring can help with plant growth.
The easy-to-grow characteristic of the plant allows it to grow in dry woodlands without a proper watering regime. People buy Lily of the Valley more often as it is low-maintenance and thrives equally well in outdoor containers as in a naturalistic environment.
