Wild Geranium Plants are hardy perennials that retruns every spring

Geranium maculatum

Geranium maculatum: TN Nursery offers a gardener's favorite plant--the geranium. This species is a woodland perennial plant with flowers that bloom in late spring and early summer. The flowers are famous for putting on a colorful show for a month or more. The geranium self-seeds eagerly, and its quick-growing root system can help you fill a flower bed with its vibrant, whimsical blooms.

Grow geraniums in flower beds, as a border species or a ground cover plant, in full sun or partial shade--they're at home almost anywhere that gets a bit of sunshine each day. Indeed, they are an unabashedly carefree plant, needing nothing more from you than water and occasional fertilizer. They will grow in attractive clumps and add natural beauty to your yard.

This North American native species grows from Canada through the middle-south region of the United States; it also grows well in the western U.S. It is heat-tolerant during the summer and can bounce back quickly after a hot spell.

Geranium maculatum Makes a Grand Statement of Color.

The stems and leaves of geranium maculatum have a tooth-like appearance in a pleasant dark green--the perfect backdrop for its romantic flowers.

Please make no mistake about it. Although the greenery can grow almost two feet high, the impressive blossoms of the geranium plant will steal the show every season!

The flowers of geranium maculatum have five softly rounded petals that measure approximately an inch-and-a-half across. Each petal lifts slightly toward the sun, forming a saucer-like appearance to the flower. The blossoms can range from pale pink to a dark shade of lavender or purple and have dark veins that add an interesting monochromatic element.

After flowering, the plant forms distinctive capsule-shaped pods about a half-inch long. The pods eventually burst open, releasing their seeds for reproduction.

Geranium Attracts an Array of Butterflies and Hummingbirds to Your Garden

If you love watching wildlife, you'll love learning that several species of butterflies, including the colorful yellowtail, find the vibrant hues of geranium blossoms irresistible. Besides seeing butterflies, you will also see entertaining hummingbirds stopping by to taste the sweet nectar.

I ordered 5 bare root sections and received them in good condition with a couple of smaller sections thrown in extra. With this plant it is necessary to wait until next spring for them to sprout.
