Weigela Shrubs are Easy Care Shrubs
Weigela, attractive, easy-care shrubs are native to Asia but have adapted well to life in other parts of the world. Hardy in growing zones 4-8, the flowering weigela (Weigela) will make a colorful addition to any landscape.
Long Lasting Blooms
Weigelas, they are deciduous shrubs that bear red, funnel-shaped blooms in the spring Fast Growing.
The red flowers retain their vivid color as they age, and will remain red until they fall off the shrub.
Under certain growing conditions, the weigela may produce a second set of blooms in the summer after a light pruning, but they will be sparse and not as vivid red as the spring blooms.
Named for the German scientist Christian Ehrenfried Weigela, this perennial shrub is in the Caprifoliaceae family. A mature weigela will reach up to 15 feet in height and equally as wide. The shrub tolerates pruning well and can be kept pruned to any desired size. Prune immediately after Bush has dropped all its blooms.
This flowering shrub is ideal for use as a tall privacy hedge or as small foundation plant. Keep it pruned to meet the needs within the landscape.
Plant weigelas in partial shade to provide them with a reprieve from the hot afternoon sun. This perennial shrub is not picky about the soil it grows in either, and will tolerate heavy clay soil.
Keep soil moist, but not soggy.
Foliage is a pale lemon color throughout the growing season, which is a perfect backdrop color for the bright red blooms.
In fall, the shade of pale yellow turns into a thick butter yellow and has long lasting fall foliage color.
Pest and Disease Resistant
Resistant to deer and most other small animals. No known disease or pest issues plague the weigelas
Weigelia Shrubs make an incredible purchase for three reasons. The plants are not only boldly beautiful, but they stand strong during droughts and cold winters and offer the homeowner little maintenance requirements.
Even hummingbirds hover about Weigelia Shrubs attracted to the plant's fragrant nectar and the ample "buffet" these shrubs provide.
The bushes thrive best in USDA zones of 3-8 and grow well in moist, well-draining soil in a sunny spot. Watering Weigelia Shrubs is not necessary because established bushes need little water unless climate conditions have been especially hot and dry. The shrubs are also deer resistant.
Weigelia Shrubs paint a landscape with vivid hues and also look stunning when paired next to other botanical showstoppers like iris, peonies, and rhododendron. These beauties allow a property to come alive in spring because they all bloom at the same time.
Weigelia remains one of the most popular flowering shrubs sold at nurseries. Even the dark foliage is attractive when the blooms have passed.
