Wax Leaf Privet Description

Wax Leaf privet

Wax leaf Privets are robust evergreen shrubs that thrive in virtually every part of the US. They make excellent hedges by forming a thick, uniform bush comprising several stems. They can grow up to 10-12 feet, which is ideal for protecting your property from prying eyes. You can also use them to divide your property into several sections.

Easy to maintain

They are propagated using seedlings that require watering during the first two years of growth. They prefer to grow in the open, enjoying full sunlight throughout the day. They tolerate most types of soil and are drought resistant.

They also grow in Zones 4 to 9, meaning you can plant them in most states. They are native plants that grow naturally without needing fertilizers and pesticides. They are easy to maintain because all you need to do is prune the new stems once in a while to keep the hedges in shape.

Wax Leaf Privet Plants attract Wildlife and Birds and are Excellent for Hedging out Paved or Concrete Pathways

This plant can withstand frostbite and winter in most regions except for the coldest states. They grow best in acidic soils with proper drainage though they will tolerate most alkaline soils. They are also salt-tolerant, making them ideal for landscaping on alkaline soils.

They tolerate pollution, meaning you can use them for landscaping properties in urban areas. Some varieties can even grow in zone 10, characterized by extreme heat and dry soils.

They attract wildlife

A shrub is a favorite nesting site for a variety of birds. Its conspicuous white flowers also attract pollinators, bees, moths, and butterflies to your property. These insects and their caterpillars then act as food for prey animals such as shrews and cuckoos. They shed leaves during summer and spring, attracting earthworms. These worms are food for frogs and salamanders.

They make excellent hedges.

These hedges add life to your property, especially if you have paved or concrete paths, forming live walls along the length of the passage. However, they will still thrive in shaded areas, so you can use them to partition forested parts of your property.

These hedges can act as a windbreak due to their sturdy structure. You can use them to protect your property and outdoor furniture from damage caused by extreme winds.

 Landscaping benefits

They grow fast and are more flexible than most other landscaping shrubs such as boxwood. If you intend to use them for landscaping, plant them close to grow into lush green shrubs of different shapes and patterns.

You can also plant them along paths on your compound by leaving a few meters of open space along the trail. These paths will form arches with well-manicured hedges growing overhead when they mature.

For instance, a pleached arch comprises two shrubs joined at the top. You can also use rows of plants to form labyrinths on your property. Such landscapes are beautiful to play areas for your children when they want to relax outdoors. These qualities make the plant suitable for special features and public and institutional settings.
