Solomon Seal is a flowering plant of the family Asparagaceae. These plants are named for the scars on the plants where leaves have dropped and resemble the sixth seal of King Solomon. True Solomon's seal plants are of the green, variegated variety. The false Solomon's seal is also a widely-grown variety. All types are well-suited for shady growing conditions and are deer resistant. True Solomon's seal plants reach a maximum height ranging from 12 inches to several feet tall. They bloom from April to June and produce white, dangling, bell-shaped blossoms that grow from arching stems. By late summer, the flowers were replaced by bluish blackberries. In fall, the foliage turns golden-yellow.
Solomon's seal grows in wooded areas of locations in zones three to seven; however, uprooting wild plants is not advisable. Instead, people who wish to grow Solomon's seal may purchase healthy plants in plant nurseries and garden centers. When planting rhizomes, it is essential to leave space to allow the growing plants to spread. Rich, moist, well-draining soil is best. However, Solomon's seal plants can tolerate drought conditions and do not wilt in the sun. These plants are primarily low-maintenance. In the beginning, it is most important to keep soil well-watered until the plant is well-established.
