Reindeer Moss $9.99 Per Sq Ft. Description

Reindeer moss

Reindeer moss is a lichen of fruticose, having a very light color, nearly white. It is a cup lichen species belonging to the Cladoniaceae family. These are perfect for growing in a variety of lands and soils including, hot and cold climates. There are some assumptions according to which a total of 6% of the earth's surface is covered with this lichen species. They are widespread in the lands of boreal forests. Also, it dominates the low alpine sites. It is a dominant species of lichens that people can observe in Canada's boreal forest.

The plant has an extensive network of branches. Each of the plant branches is again divided into two or three small branches.

Some of the thicker branches have a diameter of 1-5 mm. They have a grey or whitish color that forms a mat on the ground. It can go up to 10 cm in height. There is no well-defined and organized cortex. Instead, it has loose hyphae covering and protecting it. The species has a smaller angle of branching than Cladonia portentosa. Lichen Cladonia rangiferina also goes by the names deer moss and reindeer cup lichen.

Reindeer Moss Isn't really a moss at all

Numerous bioactive compounds are present in this species. The compounds like abietane, isopimarane, Montreal, barbatic acid, candidemia acid, and many more. These compounds are used in different antibiotics as they have inhibitory activities. This lichen inhibits the growth of harmful bacterial species such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococci. They also have a significant amount of usnic acid in their branches.

This acid plays an important role in protecting the photo symbiosis between algae and fungi. On the exposure of UV-B radiations, it releases the acid that keeps the species alive.

This plant is a beautiful lichen and has numerous advantages. It is used for making glass decoration pieces such as aquavit. People use it as decoration for windows. Many people of the Himalayas, called Monpa, use this moss species as herbal medicine to remove kidney stones. It is taken as food by the people of Inland Dena'ina. These people crush the moss, mix it with local herbs and boil them until they become soft to eat. The juice of boiled moss is considered an effective remedy against diarrhea.

They are excellent to make the burnt areas grow again. According to studies, these can grow on burnt soils as well. People can survive cold weather by eating lichen. They are easy to maintain and resistant to diseases.
