Red Weigela Plants: Weigela florida is a Large Deciduous Shrub.
Red Weigela is a deciduous shrub. Red Weigelia Shrub, a large family of shrubs native to East Asia, is prized for its intensely scarlet, trumpet-shaped blooms. The Red Weigelia Shrub flowers make the weigela an excellent shrub for attracting hummingbirds.
When the bushes are planted together, they make a uniquely beautiful hedge. Red Weigelia Shrub is also lovely planted in groups or as part of a border. It should be planted in an area where it gets full sun for the best flowers and foliage, though it can stand a little bit of shade. Red Weigela shrub should have a medium amount of water, which for this plant means a deep and thorough watering once a week.
Red Weigela Plants provide a Fragrant Nectar that Attracts Bees and Butterflies.
Though the best land for this type of Shrub is well-drained soil, it can tolerate soil that's heavy and clayey. It is a moderately fast-growing shrub and does not need that much maintenance, though it needs to be protected from cold winds that blow in from the north. The shrub only needs to be fertilized once in early spring before the flowers bloom. The Red Weigelia Shrub should be pruned right after the flowers fade. Its flowers appear from April to June. One of the attributes that make gardeners love this firey plant because its' flowers retain their fiery red throughout the season and do not fade. The 4 1/2 inch long leaves are oval in shape and medium green.
Most people would agree that Weigelia Shrubs create a romantic beauty and focal point for any landscape. The plant's cloud of five-lobed flowers pops with vibrant color and comes in shades of pink, red, white, or yellow. It's a most versatile bush offering numerous varieties that are perfect for planting in mass hedgings, along a slope, in a garden, lining pathways as edging, and even in containers.
Shrubs make an incredible purchase for three reasons. The plants are not only boldly beautiful, but they stand firm during droughts and cold winters and offer the homeowner minor maintenance requirements.
Even hummingbirds hover about Weigelia Shrubs attracted to the plant's fragrant nectar and the ample "buffet" these shrubs provide.
The bushes thrive best in USDA zones of 3-8 and grow well in moist, well-draining soil in a sunny spot. Watering Weigelia Shrubs is unnecessary because established bushes need little water unless climate conditions have been sweltering and dry. The shrubs are also deer resistant.
They often paint a landscape with vivid hues and look stunning when paired next to other botanical showstoppers like iris, peonies, and rhododendrons. These beauties allow a property to come alive in spring because they all bloom at the same time.
It also remains one of the most popular flowering shrubs sold at nurseries. Even the dark foliage is attractive when the blooms have passed.
