Landscape Appeal and Wildlife Value
Southern Magnolia is a famous decorative tree due to its dense, glossy foliage and showy, fragrant flowers. It’s an excellent choice for large landscapes or backyards and can grow to heights of 60–80 feet at maturity in ideal conditions.
The large white flowers of the Southern Magnolia lure pollinators while the large, cone-like seed pods are food for birds. With so many wildlife benefits, the Southern Magnolia is an ornamental tree to consider for your landscape.
Care and Growing Tips
Southern Magnolia loves full sun to part shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It’s very drought-tolerant, but young trees should be watered during the first couple of years. It also requires minimal pruning, just enough to tidy it up by removing dead or crossing branches. Put mulch around the base of the tree to help the dirt keep moisture and keep the roots cooler. The Southern Magnolia can take many years to grow, but it is well worth it.
