Chinese Chestnut Tree Description

Chinese Chestnut Tree - Castanea mollissima

The Chinese Chestnut tree, Castanea mollissima, is aptly named for its original home, mainland China. It is a deciduous tree that can grow anywhere from forty to sixty feet tall in maturity. The tree is resistant to the common Chestnut blight and tolerates common pests such as deer, which is beneficial for the tree's lifespan.

This tree grows well in hardiness zones 4 through 7, and prefers a well-drained soil type with a pH between 5.5-6.5 (slightly acidic to neutral). After planting, this tree will grow two to three feet annually. It takes the tree about three to five years to produce fruit after planting, which is more than most trees take to flower and produce fruit. Because this tree is apt to produce fruit, it is important to cultivate an outdoor space that is amenable to pollinator life.

Because this tree is a medium-sized, low-canopy type, it provides shade for those hot afternoons. The tree's leaves are beautiful, dark green and average about a half-foot in length (five to eight inches).

This deciduous tree provides a spot of shade and produces beautiful flowers that are mellow, yellow-white. After these showy flowers fall, they are replaced by hardened chestnuts of a beautiful brown color.

These low-lying trees are a wonderful addition in your backyard or garden because they are low maintenance and gorgeous to view. In particular, the large leaves provide a talking point because they are oblong and very shiny; providing a different look than the traditional deciduous trees of the United States.

The leaves go from a rich green to a calm yellow and brown before shedding in the fall. In landscaping, this tree can be a wonderful centerpiece of your outdoor space or can be used to fill in the outside of your space for a beautiful, lush perimeter.

Chinese Chestnut Tree , is a member of the Fagaceae native to both Korea and China

This deciduous tree features a large, open round top and produces large volumes of edible chestnuts. The tree blooms fully during the late spring months and the mid-summer months of June and July, producing fragrant flowers with a cream-white coloring.

These flowers give way to the tree's signature chestnut yield of the late summer, with the nuts being found inside protective burs. Maximum heights range from 40 feet tall to 65 feet tall, and the tree has a maximum spread of between 40 and 60 feet wide at full maturity.

The leaves of the tree are deep green, and this plant is well-tolerant to direct sunlight and moist soil. Furthermore, the Tree is well-adapted to high amounts of heat and areas of extreme humidity and is often grown in groups. When grown as a group of several trees, the tree is known to cross-pollinate, yielding more abundant volumes of nuts for the harvest. Yields from the chestnut harvest are commonly prepared by open-fire roasting.

These trees are commonly planted in gardens throughout Asia and serves as both decoration and shade protection for garden visitors and plants.
