Carex Pensylvanica -- 25 Plants $89.99 Description

Carex Pensylvanica

The Carex Pensylvanica is a beautiful vegetative grass-like herbaceous plant with triangular stems and indistinct or concealed flowers. This plant belongs to the family of plants known as cyperacae. This plant is a favorite, shade-loving perennial sedge native to North America.

Other common names are oak sedge – probably because it's often found around oak trees. It grows naturally and is commonly found in the eastern regions of North America and the temperate regions across the world.

A flower cultivated for its beauty, the plant grows maximally up to a height of 2ft (0.6m) and 1 to 3 mm (0.04 to 0.12 inch) wide and spreads horizontally by rhizomes. Rhizomes are creeping root stalks that allow new shoots to grow upward and horizontally.

They are reddish-brown and are situated underground. At its height at maturity, the attractive plant typically proliferates, forming dense mats through the rhizomes and invasive. For the beauty and abundance of a garden plant, this plant can be grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils.

It spreads slowly and ambitiously through the rhizomes and forms a turf-like floor grown through its lush evergreen leaves. It grows 3 – 6 inches a year, and the leaves arch over gracefully. It is more beautiful when arranged in clusters and provides an alternative ground and an aesthetic carpet design.

Carex Pensylvanica can be grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils

The plant comes in clusters. Each flower cluster contains a razor-sharp beautifully colored (reddish-purple) staminate scale (stem) and dark brown to purple-black pistillate scales with green and white margins. The color combination gives the Carex an excellent array of beautiful colonies.

It is pretty good for ground use, providing alternative ground cover, forming a natural lush picturesque. The plant turns your garden fantasies into a reality. It experiences exotic blooms in the spring, from April/May to June, and sometimes, July as its optimum growing season.

The hardy planting zone for the sedge is found in zone 3 – 8, meaning it can survive in the summer and other warm temperatures, just as it thrives in the cool temperate regions. For exposure, the plant requires full sun and partial shade, which implies that you should protect the plant from the sun during the afternoon. It has a low maintenance rate. It doesn't require overwatering and only needs low-rate fertilizers. The lush green turf needs no mowing or maybe mowed 2 to 3 times per year at 2 inches tall.

Among other unique features of the sedge, it provides soft, graceful ground cover for dry shade. It tolerates heavy shade with wet soil and is also drought tolerant.

• Performs best where cool summer nights provide relief from the heat.

• Beautifully-textured bright green foliage provides contrast with other broad-leaved shade plants

• No serious insect or disease problems

This sedge ships as bare-root; Bare-root plants can acclimate quickly to new soil conditions. It's also a dormant plant, meaning that it can adapt to seasonal changes. That helps artificially preserve it to store plants for shipping and conserve energy until a better cultural condition.

    Grow grass

In my opinion, not for an inexperienced Gardner....the grasses were shipped in a gallon zip lock bag which was weird, so they have to be divided up but will see how they do after some time.
