Green Mountain Boxwood 6-10" (Buxus microphylla var. japonica) is a hybrid with parent cultivars of B. sempervirens 'Suffruticosa' and B. sinica var. insularis. It was developed to have higher cold hardiness and a more upright structure. There are now over 150 species and cultivars of boxwoods known to date.
This shrub can grow to 6.5 ft in height at maturity, however this particular cultivar is slow growing and will reach only 3 ft in height over the first decade of growth. Its short stature makes it an ideal walkway border or foundation plant sitting below the bottom of household windows.

Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Green Mountain Boxwood 6-10"
This shrub prefers moist, heavily mulched, cool soils that are well-drained and it tolerates a range of soil acidity. It is a very drought tolerate shrub but is prone to root rot in soils that are not well-drained. While it is resistant to deer, rabbits, and nematodes, boxwood mites and leaf miners will take advantage of stressed plants.
It grows well in dappled shade conditions. It also will grow in full shade but it will elongate and produce sparser foliage. Full sun conditions can be too intense for this shrub and may result in the foliage turning a reddish tone. Plant this shrub in an area that is sheltered from the wind.

Care
Green Mountain Boxwood thrives in well-drained soil and requires regular watering to moisten the soil. Trim in late winter or spring to keep shape and remove dead or damaged branches. Fertilize in early spring for optimal growth.

Plant Reproduction
Green Mountain Boxwood spreads slowly, forming a compact, dense mound.
Plant bare-root shrubs during the more excellent spring or fall months, from November through April. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and slightly more profound than its height. Position the shrub so that the top of the roots is level with the ground, and put back the soil dug over the roots. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring the mulch does not touch the shrub's stem. Water regularly, especially during the first year, to establish strong roots. Prune shrubs as needed to promote healthy growth. In the spring, fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer suited to the specific needs of the shrub.
