Sphagnum is a family of over 380 recognized well-known species of mosses referred to as peat moss. However, the term also applies to peat. This plant clumps can store water because living and expired plants can retain moisture in significant amounts inside their cells.
As this plant grows, it expands into drier areas, generating huge mires, including raised and blanket bogs.
Therefore, some people refer to this plant as "environment manipulators" because it can change the composition of such ecosystems. Several carnivorous plants, orchids, sedges, and other plants enjoy the soils full of peat.
Because of the phenolic chemicals present in the moss's cell walls, the peat made from it does not decompose quickly. Bogs, such as wetlands, create anaerobic ground conditions, which results in slower anaerobic decomposition instead of aerobic microbial activity.
By absorbing cations like magnesium and calcium, it releases hydrogen ions and can also acidify its environment. Living Sphagnum has a unique structure to thrive in watery environments. Water compliments in this plants, removes the need for other support systems.
The capitulum is an arrangement of leaves at the upper part of the plant.
It collects most of the plant's nutrients through photosynthesis. Its stem and branches make up the main body, including leaves projecting from both of them. The plant's lowest sections are dead and rotting underground.
These plants lack a circulatory system that allows water and nutrients to circulate throughout the plant. As a result, tissues are thinner, one cell thick, to facilitate easy diffusion. There are two types of cells in this plant.
There are chlorophyll-containing photosynthesizing cells. Also, more significant Aline or retort cells are available.
These have a barrel shape to them. They have small openings that, like a sponge, retain moisture. This plants peculiar cells maintain the habitat wet by expelling water to keep bogs humid. All the dead moss species are part of growing media.
It is an excellent soil conditioner that improves the soil's water-holding capacity. It also enhances the capillary pressure and cation exchange capacity of nutrients. It is one of the essential features that are especially valuable in gardening.
It is an effective potting medium. Their maintenance is pretty minimal and straightforward.
They are a favorite for their soil amendments properties. Thus, people buy this plant from the local store for recreational and decorative purposes. They are resistant to diseases as well.

I tried growing this in a space of my lawn and I can say I was able to achieve my goal. Having this crawl and grow in the dry area is a success.

Sphagnum moss arrived looking fairly green and still moist even with long shipping times due to outside circumstances. After a few days of care it appears to be doing fine still. Maybe a bit more green? There were some ants and a couple spiders as well as a few leaves and sticks but very minimal. Not a moss aficionado but looks great and price was good too.

Lots of moss, more than I needed actually. Got a few spiders, pine needles and leaves. But, all in all after a clean and treatment to be sure I don't give any unwanted critters to my beloved Carnivorous plant babies, it will be a great addition to my bog!

I received the moss in very good condition, placed out immediately and have been keeping wet. Since its only been a few days, I am not certain how well it will grow. I'm not sure it will survive our hot dry summer, but I really like moss and am hopeful.
