Wintergreen Boxwood 6-10" - Buxus sinica var.insularis

The Wintergreen Boxwood 6-10" (Buxus sinica var. insularis) is a favorite for ornamental gardeners. This robust cultivar is native to the Korean peninsula and parts of northeastern China. ‘Korean Boxwood’ is another common name for this robust cultivar paying homage to the region in which it is native.

In Korea, it was cultivated to be extremely robust in cold climates. As such, its rich green foliage is maintained year-round, even in harsh winter conditions. If you are located in a northern region, this boxwood has been cultivated to be less prone to browning in the winter time than other boxwoods.

Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Wintergreen Boxwood 6-10"

It is easy to grow, extremely cold hardy, and resilient across many climatic conditions. Grows well in moist, well-drained soils. This evergreen is drought tolerant; however, to maintain lush and healthy foliage, it should be watered during dry periods. Mulch this plant yearly to maintain soil moisture. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Plants will grow in the shade however not as vigorously and with sparser foliage.

It is deer and rabbit resistant; however, it can be susceptible to box sucker, box red spider mites and leaf spot. Pruning encourages new and healthy growth, so be sure to prune after the last frost date so that new growth is not damaged by cold weather. It can be propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings.

Care

Wintergreen Boxwood thrives with regular watering, especially during dry periods. Trim as needed to preserve form and remove dead or damaged branches. To support healthy growth, fertilize annually with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer.

Plant Reproduction icon

Plant Reproduction

Wintergreen Boxwood spreads slowly, forming dense, compact, evergreen mounds.

Plant bare-root shrubs during the more excellent spring or fall months, from November through April. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and slightly more profound than its height. Position the shrub so that the top of the roots is level with the ground, and put back the soil dug over the roots. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring the mulch does not touch the shrub's stem. Water regularly, especially during the first year, to establish strong roots. Prune shrubs as needed to promote healthy growth. In the spring, fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer suited to the specific needs of the shrub.
