Silver Maple Tree is a stately, large deciduous tree that can be found native to eastern and central parts of the United States.

This tree is a great choice for planting as an ornamental in the landscape. It can be utilized as a shade tree or to create a shade garden.

This maple tree gets its name due to its beautiful leaves that are green on top and silver underneath. Its leaves are deeply lobed. Its bark is also a silver gray in color. Its flowers are small and emerge in clusters. They are not showy and are red in color.

Looking for something you can plant and forget? This is a low maintenance tree that will bring lots of impact to your yard or landscape.

Plant this tree in an area with full sun to partial shade. It will grow best in full sun. This tree will create plenty of shade underneath as it grows with its large canopy.

Plant this tree in a location that has well draining, moist, and acidic soil. Water it in thoroughly when it is first planted until it has become well established.

You will not need to fertilize this tree.

Prune this tree when you notice damaged, diseased, or rubbing branches. Pruning this tree regularly will prevent dropping limbs during storms and high winds.

Its dual winged seeds, samaras, are a great food source for small animals. Local birds will find shelter in its branches and make nests with small branches. Cavity dwelling birds will use its large cavities for shelter.

Care

Silver Maple Trees flourish in damp, well-drained soil. Regularly water during dry periods and mulch around the base to retain soil moisture. Prune in winter or early spring to preserve shape and remove dead branches. Watch for pests and diseases.

Plant Reproduction icon

Plant Reproduction

Silver Maple Tree spreads through wind-dispersed seeds called samaras.

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.
