Landscape Uses and Maintenance – Mulberry Tree

The Mulberry Tree is a native deciduous tree that has leaves with serrated edges and fruits that range from dark red to white depending on the variety.

Flowers on this tree will bloom in the spring. They are small and green – not ornamental. However, the flowers and leaves have a subtle spicy, earthy scent that you will enjoy in absence of ornamental flowers.

This is a fruit tree that will require at least a moderate amount of maintenance to stay thriving in your yard.

Plant this tree in your yard or add it to your orchard.

Water thoroughly when planting to ensure that this tree is well established in its new home. They need plenty of water when first planted but avoid overwatering. Make sure to keep an eye on watering this tree, as a lack of water will make the immature fruits fall off prematurely. This fruit tree is tolerant of droughts but should be watered in extreme cases.

Prune in winter when this tree is not actively growing. Take care to remove any diseased, damaged, or rubbing branches.

The flowers attract bees. The fruits will attract plenty of wildlife to your garden, including birds, squirrels, and other mammals.

Noteworthy Characteristics

The Mulberry Tree has fruits that are edible and similar in shape to that of blackberries or raspberries but are not sold in stores due to poor shelf life. Quickly pick the fruits of your labor and eat them! You can eat them raw or cooked.

This is a tree that is self- and wind- pollinated in addition to attracting to bees, so if your property has a low population of these insects, you will still be able to have fruits.

Care

Mulberry trees thrive in well-drained soil and benefit from regular watering, especially during dry periods. They should be trimmed in winter to preserve shape and remove dead branches. In spring, they should be fertilized annually with a balanced fertilizer. Mulch near the bottom to retain moisture and control weeds.

Plant Reproduction icon

Plant Reproduction

Mulberry trees spread through seeds, root suckers, and bird droppings.

Plant fruit trees in early spring or late fall when the weather is cool. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the roots and double as deep as the root system. When the tree is put in the hole, make sure the graft union (a noticeable bump where the tree was grafted above the rootstock) is above the soil line. Put dug-out soil around the tree roots, gently firmly remove air pockets, and water thoroughly.
Water young trees regularly, especially during dry spells, to establish a robust root system. Once established, water deeply and less frequently. Prune fruit trees yearly during the dormant season to remove dead or diseased wood, improve air circulation, and shape the tree for optimal fruit production. Fertilize in early spring and thin the fruit when necessary to prevent overbearing, which can stress the tree and reduce fruit quality.

Mulberry trees thrive in full sun, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. They can tolerate some partial shade, but total sun exposure is best for optimal fruit production and growth.

Planted the mulberry tree in a large pot for now. It came well packed and protected. Actually it was starting to push out tiny leaves so I know it was happy. The roots were packed with damp shreds of paper to hold moisture. I’m looking forward to getting it in the ground. Thank you

Exactly as described. Extremely pleased.

I ordered 6 trees, 2 kinds of 3 different trees, during their buy one get one free sale on fruit trees. I knew they wouldn't ship immediately as stated on the website. I ordered what I wanted and several weeks later, once my area stopped getting below freezing, I messaged the company with an inquiry about my order and supplied my order number. They promptly returned my message. My Trees, 1-2' saplings, were shipped the next day and I received them the following day. They were packed well and had adequate moisture. I also received extra trees in my order which I am extremely grateful for. I will definitely be ordering again in the future. Very pleased with my experience. I have planted them & will see how they do in the coming months

Great trees!

The trees arrived in good, bare root condition, very well packed. So well packed, if fact, that while preparing to plant the trees on April 18, I found a box that TN had shipped last November which had somehow gotten misplaced in my Pennsylvania garage, and upon opening this six month old box, I found the mulberry trees inside to still look pretty good. So I planted those too!

In my opinion, the company could stand to improve their communication a bit, but there's no quibbling with the quality of their products.

Satisfied Customer

I found TN Nursery on the web, they had the bet prices and a BOGO. Order process great, I received one extra tree and they are all budding. They arrived as bare root stock and looked great. There was a few day delay in correspondence but I know they are busy in the spring. Would certainly buy again. I saw some comments on the web that this might possibly be a **** business, it certainly is not. Thank you TN Nursery! Tom
