    Elderberry Tree

Posted by Lloyd on Apr 23 , 2020

I just received the 5 plants on Monday. It rained all day Tuesday, but planted on Wednesday. There was very little of the water retention pellets, and would not have lasted past three days. The one plant had only two hair roots, so not certain it will revive. I hope to have the opportunity to comment in 4+ weeks to add something about plants at that time.

Description

Elderberry tree - Sambucus - is a Fast Growing Plant Commonly Grown for Hedging.

The elderberry tree (Sambucus) is also commonly referred to as the elder. It is a flowering plant in the Adoxaceae family. It can be found growing in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Elderberry grows best in areas of high nitrogen levels. They do well in organic compost. It will, however, grow in nearly any type of soil conditions as long as it gets partial to full sun. It is a fast-growing plant that is commonly used for hedge. Elderberries are a food source for birds in northern California. Elder has been used medicinally for decades. In Chinese medicine, it has been crushed into wine and tea and used for rheumatism and traumatic injury. Uncooked berries from this plant are poisonous, but when cooked, they can be consumed by humans.

Elderberry Trees produce a Medicinal Fruit but can also be a Great Garden Landscape Addition.

The leaves, stems, twigs, and roots are also toxic if ingested. Raw elderberries are comprised of 18% carbohydrates, 80% water, and less than 1% of protein and fat. They contain a high content of vitamin C. Elderberry is commonly used in common day vitamin forms to help treat the flu, constipation, colds, and some autoimmune diseases. It can be found in health food stores in capsule or tea form. Elderberry produces a large hedge, but it is also planted to attract butterflies and bees due to flowers. The flowers bloom a bright white in the late spring and then turn into a dark, almost black, berry by late summer or early fall. When planting an elderberry tree, it is best to plant two near each other for cross-pollination. They grow best in hardiness zones 4 to 9. Elderberry trees grow five to twelve feet in height, but some have been recorded as twenty feet tall. They typically grow six to twelve feet wide because they proliferate they are used for filling in dead spots in gardens.

When you think of Elderberry, you likely think of products in the health food or supplement section of your grocery store. Elderberry has become a buzzword for many health supplements, but that is not its only used. Elderberry trees, in addition to providing this medicinal fruit, can be a great addition to your garden landscape.

In addition to its medicinal berries, the tree can provide a gorgeous ornamental tree for your garden. Many people plant trees for decoration, though if you plan to harvest berries from yours, you will need at least two trees to encourage cross-pollination.

This beautiful tree is not overly large and is often planted as bushes that bloom all over with clusters of tiny white or pale pinkish flowers throughout spring and summer. In fall, the forests become full of reddish-purple berries for which the tree is famous. The elderberry bush provides color and beauty to your garden for much of the year and a sweet scent.

Elderberries make a perfect privacy hedge or ornamental tree to accent your garden. They grow full but not overly tall. They can be landscaped as a bush or as a small tree. The Elderberry is suited to almost any type of sun. They can grow in the shade, in partial sun, or in full sun. They are not particularly picky about the location or soil type. They prefer soil that is slightly acidic but can grow just about anywhere. They are easy to grow without much fuss and provide beautiful flowers. They make the perfect ornamental but, should you choose to do so, also bear useful fruit.

The tree will grow well as a companion with many other plants, making it perfect for someone desiring a varied landscape. Companion plants that work well with Elderberry include gooseberry, winterberry, and white pine. Bee balm is a great herb to grow under the shade of the Elderberry. The Elderberry's versatility means that it can grow under the shade of taller trees or provide shade for smaller plants just as easily. Many gardeners plant Elderberry alongside their vegetable gardens to provide shade or use the hardy bush as a hedgerow. The Elderberry is a real workhorse of a plant, able to be shaped tall as a tree or broader as a bush, used for medicinal properties, or as a beautiful flower. It provides shade or grows under shade. It attracts birds for those wanting more wildlife outside their window. It is strong and sturdy as its petals are delicate and beautiful. To anyone wishing to enhance their landscape, the Elderberry is an obvious choice.
