Black Oak Seedlings
Black Oak Seedlings: Quercus coccinea, or black oak seedlings, are a hardy, hardwood native North American species originating in the eastern United States. They grow well in most USDA growing zones--even in the Floridian heat.
Black oak seedlings require careful consideration before you plant them. They require full sunshine or a partially-sunny location. It would help if you amended the earth with ample woody organic materials. Black oak seedlings perform well in planting mediums like shredded leaf litter, hardwood mulch, peat moss, or compost.
Once they have a robust root system, they become very hardy--drought-tolerant, heat-tolerant, and cold-tolerant.
Your Black Oak Seedlings Will Grow to a Medium Height
When you look at your black oak seedlings, it can be hard to imagine the full-grown specimen they will become. They generally mature at a maximum height of eighty feet and a full green canopy of up to sixty feet.
The leafy branches will provide a shady retreat for birds to build their nests and raise their young. Bees, butterflies, insects, and other pollinators will enjoy the shade on hot summer days.
Just imagine what your black oak seedlings will look like when grown. The trunk will be dark gray with slight furrowing. It will, in time, produce half-inch or larger acorns with a deep, bowl-shaped cap. When they drop in the autumn, you will watch busy squirrels collecting them to store away for the winter.
Leaves will grow large as four to six inches in width and six inches in length. Every glossy, bright emerald leaf will have a lighter underside, an oval to an elliptical shape, and seven pointy lobes. The autumn chill will bring a brilliant show of scarlet as the leaves put on their fall colors.
