Pitch Pine Tree (Pinus rigida)

Pitch Pine Tree: Pinus rigida, or the pitch pine tree, is a fast-growing evergreen native to the east coast of the United States. It grows best from Maine through northern Georgia and west across the Great Lakes into the Minnesota plains. However, it is well-adaptable and worth a try in other areas of those growing zones.

Besides commercial use for wood pulp and lumber, residents purchase the pitch pine tree to define a property's boundary or establish a wooded natural area.

The pitch pine tree prefers full sunshine and well-drained soil. It is unfussy about soil quality and requires no care once its roots strengthen.

Other common names for pinus rigida

Other than pitch pine, Pinus rigida has these other common names:

  • Black pine
  • Hard pine
  • Torch pine
  • Yellow pine
  • Northern pitch pine

Each term refers to the same species.

The Tall Pitch Pine Trees Appearance

The pitch pine tree grows to a mature height of about seventy feet. The tree's top displays a roughly triangular shape as it grows but forms a softly rounded shape when full-grown.

The trunk grows to about a two-foot diameter and bears thickened, yellowish-brown, deeply-furrowed bark.

Pitch pine tree branches form interesting, gnarled shapes that droop gracefully. They form tufts of three- to five-inch needles in bundles of threes. The needles are medium green with a warm, golden undertone.

The "fruit" of the pitch pine tree is its pine cone, which grows in attractive whorls of up to five cones. They are about three inches long with stiff, curved pines. The tree typically "drops" the pinecones in the fall.
