Hedwigia Ciliate Moss - Hedwigia ciliata

Hedwigia ciliate, commonly referred to as Fringe Moss or Medusa Moss, is a stunning find in any landscape or garden. The tops of the leaflets almost look like a wacky hairdo, which is responsible for its common names. It can be found just about anywhere as it is an incredibly adaptable moss. It is known for its ability to thrive on dryer surfaces, clinging to rocks and bringing new life into poor quality grow spots.

Plant Details - Hediwigia Cilate Moss

Family: Hedwigiaceae

Light Requirement: Full Sun – Partial Shade

Water Needs: Low - Moderate

Height: 1-3 cm.

Spread: Indefinite

Growth Rate: Slow

Wildlife Value: Provides shelter and nutrients for small creatures, prevents soil erosion, works to restore broken down rocks

While mosses typically require quite high levels of moisture, this moss can handle light drought conditions. Similarly, it is also tolerant of sunny spots that most mosses are too sensitive to handle. This is a powerhouse of a plant that also boasts attractive silvery leaflets atop sprawling green stems. The mounding growth habit of this plant creates a pleasant cushion texture that adds softness to even the most hardened landscapes.

Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Hedwigia Cilate Moss

While mosses are generally known to be low maintenance, this moss might take the cake. It tolerates a very wide range of moisture and light levels, requiring only a steady place to take root. Hedwigia Cilate Moss grows best in partial shade or sun with consistent humidity but be sure to avoid waterlogging and full shade. It is sensitive to heavy foot traffic, so be mindful of where you plan to cultivate this moss.

Noteworthy Characteristics

From far away, Hedwigia ciliate can appear like a mat of green with white dots all over. When getting a closer look, you can observe the fringe-like tops that lend their silvery-white color. The color contrast adds a remarkable layer of texture to any hardscape or rock garden.

Care

Hedwigia ciliate moss thrives in moist, well-draining soil. Keep it consistently damp but not waterlogged. Regular misting helps maintain humidity and ensures good air circulation around the moss to prevent mold. Avoid putting it in places with heavy foot traffic.

How to Grow and Care for Moss

Moss is a timeless, low-maintenance plant that brings a soft, green carpet to shaded gardens, woodland paths, stone walls, and water features. Unlike traditional plants, moss doesn't have roots—it absorbs water and nutrients directly through its leaves—making it ideal for moist, acidic soils and areas with poor fertility. To grow moss successfully, choose a shaded or partially shaded location with consistent humidity and minimal foot traffic.

Prepare the site by clearing debris and lightly roughing up the soil or surface to help the moss adhere. Gently press live moss onto the area, mist with water, and keep it consistently moist for several weeks to encourage establishment. Moss prefers rainwater or distilled water, as tap water may contain minerals that hinder growth.

Once established, moss requires very little care—no mowing, fertilizing, or pruning. Simply keep it moist and remove any fallen leaves or debris to prevent smothering. With its rich texture and calming appearance, moss adds a natural elegance and sense of tranquility to any landscape.

Excellent!

Priced right, packaged extremely well and I ordered just enough! Yay! I am thrilled and frankly know of no other nursery selling quantities of moss! Instructions for a slurry were included to get the moss out to a good start and 2 days of rain helped! Excellent!

100 sq feet of mosses

Moss was delivered a little more dry than the first shipment. First shipment was sealed in plastic and this time the plastic was just draped over it. It was a larger order. Once we moss was misted it jumped right back up. Some that were brown even regained their green hue. Very pleased.

Love it!

The moss I ordered arrived in healthy condition and has been put down. Now I wait and water! I'd love to show pictures, because it came out beautiful. Just hope it lives. I've been harvesting moss out of our woods so half was already done. I have high hopes!
