Sycamore
The Platanus Occidentalis, known more commonly by the names American Sycamore Tree, Buttonwood Tree, and Buttonball Tree. Its a large, deciduous, tall-growing member of the Platanacae family that found throughout the United States. Typically, the tree is found in moist areas of low elevation, growing near lowland streams and by the riverbank in the flatter parts of the country. The American Sycamore is ideally grown in USDA Growing Zones 4 – 9 and reaches up to 100 feet tall when fully mature. The American Sycamore has an equally large maximum spread, also reaching up to 100 feet in full diameter.
The flowers of the Sycamore Tree bloom starting in the late Spring, with female flowers being reddish in color and male flowers taking on a more yellowish characteristic appearance. It's female flowers produce a furry circular fruiting body with a maximal width of up to 1.5 inches, and these fruiting bodies become ripe during the later Fall months of the year. The leaves of the American Sycamore are a darker green color with a maximum spread of up to 10 inches wide.
The bark of this tree typically acquires a unique whitish color, making the American Sycamore easy to identify in areas of high vegetation.
