The plants are wonderful additions to any garden. These spectacular plants tend to add rich texture and depth to any floral garden arrangement. These green plants are best grown in zones 3 to 8 or even 9. As a perennial, the steady growth speed assures many years of enjoyment. In early spring, newer green shoots reach upwards and have a tendency to bend over. Closely clumped together clusters of glorious stalk displays reveal green to bluish-green and even gray/purple-tinged foliage.

These plants adds a bit of framework, or architectural structure, to an otherwise flattened garden scene. This stunning showcase plant arches over more delicate smaller plants provides welcome shade relief and intriguing shadows.

In spring, bell-shaped white or pink flowers dangle enticingly under curved green wands of delightful leafy clusters. It is not unusual to see these plants under tall shade trees, and they are best planted in areas prone to dapple effect sunlight. The fragrant flowers eventually turn into small berries colored purple to black.

While the berries should not be eaten by humans, they draw in nearby wildlife species creating a spectacular natural habitat. Most varieties  grow from under 6 inches to 3 feet tall.

The plant is sought after for its broad, paired leaves that are found along the burgundy-colored stems. The leaves can be from four to six inches long, and some varieties have green leaves attractively edged with white.

The leaves turn bright gold in the fall. The flowers are unusual in that they are small, white, and dangle from arching stems. Their fragrance is said to resemble the sweet smell of lilies. The flowers bloom from spring to summer and give way to black fruit in the fall. 

These plants grow at a moderate rate and does best in partial to full shade and medium to wet, acidic soil enriched with a lot of organic matter. This makes it perfect for that wet spot in the garden that doesn't get a lot of suns.

It's also an excellent plant to put in a rain garden. Despite this, it tolerates drought, dry or eroded soil, and very deep shade. The plant is an excellent choice to grow with spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils or other shrubs that do well in the shade.

It's also good for rock gardens and naturalized areas of the property. Because the plant spreads via rhizomes, it is a good ground cover. Some people use the roots medicinally, so it also has a place in an herb garden. The plants should be placed about a foot apart and can be propagated by division in the spring.

We sell only bare root plants. We dip the roots in tera-sorb silicone gel to retain ample moisture for transit and surround with plastic. This is superior protection for plants in transit for up to 12 days.

Upon Receipt Of Your Plants

Open your plants and inspect the same day received. We offer 3 days to report any problems with your order. Bare root plants need to be planted within 2-3 days of receiving unless weather-related problems prohibit planting. Store in a cool place and keep roots moist and covered with plastic until they can be planted. Water for the first week daily after planting.
