Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Willow Oak Tree

Willow Oak Tree will create great aesthetic appeal on your property and provide great value to your local wildlife.

This tree is native to the southeast parts of the United States. Its shiny green leaves will turn shades of yellow and deep orange with the fall color change, creating a beautiful autumn display.

Plant this tree as an ornamental focal point in your yard or use it to create a shade garden. Excellent when planted as a landscape tree or along rivers.

Plant it in a location that has full sun to partial shade. It will grow the best in a location with full sun. You should avoid planting it in a location with deep shade, as this will affect its growth over time.

Plant this tree in moist and acidic well draining soil. This tree is tolerant to drought once it is established in its new location. Be sure to water it thoroughly until that time. Avoid planting this tree in clay or compacted soil.

Routine pruning is not necessary for this tree. Be sure that you prune away any damaged or diseased branches in a timely manner.

This tree will produce plenty of acorns that will fall to the ground below. Its acorns will provide food for squirrels, small mammals, turkeys, and other birds.

With its expansive canopy and branching, this tree will provide valuable shelter for birds. Its branches and twigs are used by nesting birds, while its cavities are used by cavity dwelling birds.

Noteworthy Characteristics

Plant their favorites, and they will come! The Willow Oak Tree is a host plant for many butterflies, including the Banded Hairstreak and Horace’s Duskywing.

Care

Willow Oak Trees thrive in well-drained soil and require regular watering, especially during dry periods. Trim as needed to release dead or diseased branches and to maintain a strong structure. Watch for nuisances and diseases, treating them promptly if issues arise.

Willow Oak Tree spreads through acorns falling and germinating

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.
