Wild Blackberry - Rubus moluccanus

The Wild Blackberry (Rubus moluccanus) is native to eastern Australia and Southeast Asia. It is considered to be a scrambling or climbing shrub that has a vigorous growth habit, forming dense thickets of robust and woody stems. It grows well in disturbed areas, along forest edges, and roadsides.

The robust stems of this shrub are grayish brown to reddish in color and covered in prickly hooked thorns. The leaves are large and covered in spines themselves. They have a crinkled appearance on the surface and are lush green in color. Flowering in spring, the blooms emerge on a terminal and compound raceme and are pinkish-white to bright white in color.

The Wild Blackberry is deciduous, losing it leaves in the autumn; however, these dense thickets remain. While the plant is considered invasive and, in some regions of the world, a noxious weed, it does provide an excellent food source for wildlife and its growth habit creates a protective habitat for birds and small mammals.

Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Wild Blackberry

This plant is both easy to grow and tends to adapt well to many environments, which is why it is so successful across the globe. They prefer full sun and will need this condition for the best berry production.

While it is a useful and beautiful plant, it has been identified as invasive to many regions around the world. If planting in your own garden, be aware that it will take over areas if not managed.

Always wanted blackberries

I've always wanted wild blackberries on my property. Unfortunately, the state of Missouri killed all of the wild Blackberry patches in our area. Other than being a little dry, the brambles were in good condition. Water and Miracle-Gro will take care of the rest. Thank you!
