Notable Characteristics of Pink Crepe Myrtle

The Pink Crepe Myrtle gets its name for its glorious pink flowers. Their petals are thin and crinkled, resembling the texture of crepe paper, or even the thin, delicate dough of a French crepe. It has sinewy, fluted branches and its bark has a mottled appearance, creating almost a striped effect. The leaves are found in thick clusters, their bright green color shining against the deep pink of the flowers. If you look closely, you can even see that the leaves have a pinkish red tint to them running along their veins, creating a harmonious overall look.

Landscape and Maintenance of Pink Crepe Myrtle

The Pink Crepe Myrtle needs consistent moisture, especially before they have established themselves after planting. During the hottest and driest months they may require supplemental watering, but can be remarkably drought tolerant once established. It is especially important to provide consistent watering during the flowering season, to ensure the blooms are as large and vibrant as possible in your garden. This tree will thrive with full sun and well draining soil, but overall is a very low maintenance tree. The flourishing pink blooms are sure to be the perfect centerpiece for your garden scape.

Care

Sioux Pink Crepe Myrtle thrives in well-drained soil and needs regular watering, especially during dry periods. Prune in late winter or early spring to preserve shape and release dead wood. In spring, apply a balanced fertilizer for optimal growth and blooms.

Plant Reproduction icon

Plant Reproduction

Red Crepe Myrtle spreads via seeds and root suckers.

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.
