Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Pecan Tree

The Pecan Tree is a native tree that will bring tall beauty and structure to your yard or nuttery.

With its great height and spread of branches, this tree will bring plenty of shade to your yard. Perfect for resting underneath in a hammock or on a blanket.

This is the ideal nut tree for harvesting sweet nuts. Its nuts are perfect for eating raw, processing into sweet pecan pies and cookies, or turning into candied pecans for holiday gifting.

The leaves are long, with a brilliant, bright green and have serrated edges. Leaves will turn yellow in fall. Its male flowers are long catkins, with pollen being carried by the wind to the female flowers.

The trees develop husks that begin green and turn to brown as it matures, hiding and protecting the nut inside. The nuts grow in groups. Nuts are ready for harvesting from fall through winter. Harvest nuts quickly; they are a favorite for mammals.

Plant this tree in an area with full sun and plenty of space. This plant prefers to be planted in well draining, loamy soil. Avoid clay soils that may become waterlogged.

This is a low maintenance tree suitable for the busy forager. As a tree with a long lifespan, your family and many future generations will benefit from planting this tree.

Prune yearly, taking care to prune away any damaged, diseased, or rubbing branches.

Protect against browsing and rub damage from deer and other pests while the tree is young by protecting with fencing or caging. This will become unnecessary as the tree matures.

Care

Pecan trees thrive in well-drained soil and benefit from regular watering, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring and ensure proper pruning to maintain structure and health. Monitor for pests like pecan weevils and treat them as needed.

Plant Reproduction icon

Plant Reproduction

Pecan Tree spreads via wind-dispersed seeds and root sprouts.

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.
