Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Loblolly Pine Tree

Loblolly Pine Tree is a very fast growing, pyramidal evergreen and conifer in the Pine family. It has thin, dark green needles in groups of three.

This evergreen tree can be the focus of your winter garden, native garden, or woodland garden, making a beautiful statement with its green needles. This tree is great for creating a living privacy screen.

Plant this tree in a location with full to partial sun. Avoid planting this tree in a location that has full shade.

This tree prefers moist or wet soil. It can be planted in various soil textures, including clay, sand, or loam. Water this tree thoroughly until it is well established in your landscape and during dry periods.

This tree can handle occasional, but not consistent, drought or flooding. It can be planted in wet areas but avoid heavy overwatering with this tree.

There is no need for consistent pruning. Watch this tree for structural issues that may arise  in time. Remove any damaged or diseased branches.

It will attract wildlife to your garden; including mammals, birds, and butterflies. Squirrels, other small mammals, and birds will eat the seeds from this tree. This tree is an important nesting site of the Bald Eagle, particularly in the Virginia region, and for Ospreys.

Watch for signs of bark intruding pests, like the southern pine and engraver beetles.

Its self sowing seeds will create a stand of this tree in time – a good option for creating a more natural fence or wind barrier.

This tree is deer resistant.

Noteworthy Characteristics

The Loblolly Pine Tree is a host for the Imperial Moth and the Eastern Pine Elfin Moth.

Care

Loblolly pines thrive in well-drained soils. Water regularly, especially when young or during dry spells. Prune to preserve form and remove dead or diseased limbs. Fertilize annually in early spring for optimal growth.

Plant Reproduction icon

Plant Reproduction

Loblolly Pine Tree spreads by wind-dispersed seeds and natural regeneration.

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.
