Notable Characteristics - Forest Pansy Redbud Trees

As a North American native, Forest Pansy Redbud Trees thrive in the landscape of the eastern United States. They are very hardy once established and can thrive in many climatic areas. The bare trunk and branches of this tree provide visual interest even without the blossoms, because it is a multi trunked tree that can spread up to 35 feet. Should you desire, this tree can also be pruned to be a single trunk. The blooms have five large, pillowy petals that range from deep to light pink. The leaves are heart shaped and a rich, red color. The tree bears brown bean pods that dry and may stay on the branches during winter, creating a unique off season look.

Landscape and Maintenance

In order to combat the myriad of disease and insect problems the Forest Pansy Redbud Trees face including canker, dieback, and leaf spots, keep them well maintained through regular watering, fertilization, and pruning back dead branches as needed to help keep the trees healthy. This tree does not tolerate being transplanted, so plant it in one spot and keep it there. This tree is a gorgeous little addition to your yard or garden in every season and would fit well into any woodland or native space!

Plant Reproduction

Forest Pansy Redbud spreads by seeds, root suckers, and grafting

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.

Forest Pansy Redbuds

I plant them in an understory type environment beneath tall trees or near the edge of a wooded area where I can see them from spring to fall. I plant multiple ones since I live in a wooded area. They are one of my favorite flowering trees

Tall saplings

This is my 2nd order for the Pansy Forest Redbud. My puppy decided to chew my last tree order from a 5ft sapling to a 1ft sapling. Both orders were packaged well. Trees are true to height in the 4-5" range. The roots came in a plastic bag with paper shreds around them and moisture in the bag so the roots wouldn't dry out. I live nearby and love driving by the nursery. Such a beautiful landscape. Looking forward to these growing this year!
