Dutch Iris - Iris × hollandica

The Dutch Iris is a showy flower that is actually a hybrid. It does not occur naturally but was bred for its gorgeous, orchid-like blooms. It was developed from a species of iris native to Portugal, Spain and North Africa, but has quickly become a favorite of gardeners and florists across the world. The blooms are long-lasting and make great cut flowers, looking just as beautiful in a vase as they will in your garden.

Plant Details - Dutch Iris

Family: Iridaceae

Light Requirement: Full sun

Water Needs: Average

Height: 18-24 in

Spread: 3 in

Soil Preference: Well-drained

Bloom Time: May - June

Flower Color: Yellow, Blue, Purple, White, Orange, Gold

Wildlife Value: Bees, Butterflies, Other pollinators

Notable Characteristics - Dutch Iris

The Dutch Iris grows from a teardrop shaped bulb differing from other Irises which grow from thickened roots called rhizomes. Its foliage is grass-like with thin, strappy, sword shaped leaves. The stem is thin but sturdy, helping to hold up its large blooms. The flowers themselves come in a variety of vibrant colors, and have six, silky petals: three that stand upright towards the center called standards, and three large petals called falls that bend gently downward. The falls typically are spotted with a large birthmark of sorts – a large, yellow or orange dot at the base of the petal that rounds upward to the middle. It's a very distinct marking that adds wonderful interest to the stunning blooms.

Landscape and Maintenance

This showy flower may be an introduced species to North America, but it is not invasive because it stays where it is planted and does not spread. It has no fragrance but is still attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies through its vibrant colors. It thrives in full sun and well drained soil, and will perennialize best in soil that stays hot and dry in the summer. If your landscape has wet soil in the summer, you can even dig up the Dutch Iris bulbs and store them in a cool, dry place before replanting them in the fall, therefore sparing the plant from a summer of root rot and ensuring its beauty the following year.
