Bald Cypress -- Taxodium Distichum
Sometimes called the Swamp Cypress, this graceful tree grows in swamps, bogs, and bayous. It is the state tree of Louisiana and a prominent feature of the Florida Everglades. When most people think of bayous and swamps, they picture Bald Cypresses draped in Spanish moss. Adding a Bald Cypress to your landscape can give it that same air of mystery.

A Bald Cypress is a tall tree that will make an imposing presence in your garden. Its branches grow in a cone shape. It can grow from 75 to 100 feet tall. Its diameter can reach six feet around. Because of its size and its conical shape, the Bald Cypress commands attention in any landscape. This makes it a popular choice for many different landscaping styles.
You should plant your Bald Cypress in a more considerable lot where it has room to spread and grow. These trees are excellent for lining a roadway or driveway, creating a forested area or adding color to a fence.
The Bald Cypress is a beautiful tree with silvery gray needles that turn bright green in the summer. In the fall, they become a deep reddish color before falling off. The bark is dark brown.
Although Bald Cypresses are fond of wet, swampy soils, it's possible to grow them in most gardens. These sturdy, healthy trees resist cold weather and can flourish in low-nutrient soil. They do best in Zones 4 to 9. Keep your Bald Cypress healthy by keeping its soil damp, acidic and sandy. Bald Cypresses need full sunshine.
