Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Virginia Pine Tree

The Virginia Pine Tree is a slow growing evergreen and conifer with short, scrubby looking branches and twisting green needles. This tree is an excellent choice for a collector’s garden, winter garden, or woodland garden. Plant this tree as an accent in your landscape or garden.

Its reddish bark is quite attractive and has thick, scaly ridges. Cones are relatively small, brown, and are spiny. Its young pollen cones are yellow in color.

This tree is a low maintenance option for the gardener looking to add a tree with four season interest to their property.

This tree will grow the best in well draining soil. It can tolerate sandy, loamy, or clay soil. This tree will not tolerate some conditions: avoid planting in wet soil, poorly draining soil, or overwatering this tree.

This tree will not need regular pruning; only prune if you notice damaged or diseased branches. Watch this tree for signs of powdery mildew and blight.

Plant this tree in an area that gets full sun. You should avoid planting this tree in partial or full shade, as it will affect its growth long term.

This tree is attractive to many birds that will eat its seeds and nest in its branches.

This plant is deer resistant. Protect this tree when it is young if there are not many other options for food available.

Noteworthy Characteristics

The Virginia Pine Tree is a host plant for the Imperial Moth and the Eastern Pine Elfin.

Its size is generally accepted to be 15 – 40 feet tall, but in especially habitable conditions it can grow to reach 60 feet tall.

This tree is often used for erosion control.

Care

Virginia Pine Trees thrive in well-drained soil and require moderate watering, especially during dry periods. Trim to release dead or diseased branches and maintain a central leader. In early spring, fertilize with a balanced fertilizer to support healthy growth.

Plant Reproduction

Virginia Pine spreads by seeds released from cones, carried by wind

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.
