Grape Vine Plants for Sale | Vitis Vinifera

The Grape Vines Plant (Vitis vinifera) is the most common grape sold in grocery stores and is native to central Asia and Europe. It is a woody deciduous vine and has large, lush green leaves. The fruits, flowers and even the leaves of this plant are all edible. The fruit can either be eaten directly, or made into a fruit concentrate or wine. And the leaves can be used to make dolmas.

Support and training are required for the plant to be optimally productive, so fix this plant to a long trellis and enjoy grapes year after year. However, you can plant this plant to provide a natural shade structure for your patio, deck or pergola. They make an ideal cover as they shade in the summer time when the leaves are fully expanded and allow light to filter through during the winter when it is needed most.

This grape prefers full sun and must be planted in a protected area where it can remain sheltered from winter frost and strong winds. However, the plant needs good air circulation, so it is highly recommended that you take time and consideration when choosing the planting location.

Hot and humid climate regions, like the southeast of the USA, can negatively impact fruit production. If planting in these regions, make sure that the plants are maintained in a lower-moisture area. If you would like time to build a trellis or work out a garden location for your plant, purchase the Grape Vine 3-4'. However, if you already have a support system, purchasing the Grape Vines (Fruit Bearing Age) stage will lead to a sooner harvest.

Why Grape Vine Plants Are Ideal for Edible & Shaded Gardens

This vine prefers loamy, humus-rich, but well-drained soils. However, it tolerates a range of soil types and conditions.

It is susceptible to a myriad of pests and diseases. One is the grape phylloxera, which damages root structure with the follow-on impacts of disrupting water and nutrient uptake. Attention and care will be required for growing this plant. A regular spraying and pruning routine is required for optimal production, like with many crops.

Care

Grape vines thrive with regular watering and well-draining soil. Trim annually to maintain shape and encourage fruit production. Watch for pests and diseases, and provide support with trellises or arbors. Fertilize during the growing season.

How to Grow and Care for Fruit Trees and Berry Plants

Fruit trees and berry plants bring beauty, fragrance, and delicious harvests to your garden while supporting pollinators and wildlife. To grow them successfully, choose varieties suited to your USDA zone and plant them in full sun—at least 6–8 hours daily—for the best fruit production. Both fruit trees (like apple, peach, and pear) and berry plants (like blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry) thrive in well-draining, compost-enriched soil.

Plant in early spring or fall, spacing according to the plant’s mature size to ensure proper airflow and sunlight. Water deeply after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate temperature, but keep it a few inches away from the trunk or stems.

Prune annually to encourage healthy branching and better yields. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced or fruit-specific blend. With regular care, fruit trees and berry plants reward you with beautiful blooms and sweet, homegrown harvests for years to come.
