The Allegheny spurge (Pachysandra procumbens) is a popular semi-evergreen perennial used for being hardy as well as its low-lying expansive ground cover. It is best grown in medium moisture, well-drained mildly acidic organic soil while avoiding heavy clay. With time it will become drought resistant. Pachysandra procumbens is an excellent choice for erosion control. They especially thrive under large trees with filtered light, but otherwise, do well in part shade to full shade like sides of buildings. Average height is about 6", and the tooth-edged leaves reach upwards of 3" in length. Its spreading stems are anywhere from 4-6" in length, sometimes longer than that. Pachysandra procumbens is a slow grower at first and requires a little bit of weed control. Once established, it grows quickly to fill the available space with a lush, vibrant carpet. The foliage is not shiny but instead a matte blue-green, dappled with light purple or white. Starting from March to April, Pachysandra procumbens starts to bloom before starting new leaf growth. The spikes can grow upwards of 2" to 4" inches long, are especially fragrant. Colors range from greenish-white to pale pink.
