Effortless Elegance- Tips for Growing Hostas
Hostas are perennial plants that are grown for their lavish foliage. They will compliment almost any other type of garden plant. Originating in Japan, China, and Koreas, there are thousands of different varieties. Hostas are elegant, striking, and almost effortless to grow with these simple tips.
Choosing the Right Hosta for a Garden
Some Hostas are made for the shade, and some for the sun. Most people associate them with shade gardens. However, some varieties are sun worshippers. When choosing which type to include in a garden, consider how much light space receives.
The sun-loving Hostas usually have golden leaves and fragrant flowers. Some of the white, or variegated, leaved ones also fair pretty well in direct sunlight. Here are a few popular choices:
Crown Jewel
American Sweetheart
Bright Lights
Fire Island
The blue type needs the most amount of shade. This is because the blue color comes from a waxy coating on the surface of the leaf. In direct light, this coating can melt, leaving the plant vulnerable to burns. Most green Hostas also require some degree of shade. A few good ones are:
Moonlight Sonata
Mississippi Delta
Big daddy
Sleeping Beauty
Hostas should be planted in well-drained soil. It is ideal to feed them with an organic fertilizer when they are put into the ground. When spacing the plants, it is a good practice to follow the accompanying directions. Since they will easily double in size, plants can become overcrowded. Dark mulch adds a nice contrast to the foliage and retards weed growth.
Maintenance Tips:
Create shade by adding shrubs. Arbors, pergolas, and trellises with climbing vines also an attractive way to provide shelter from sunlight.
Prune dead leaves and flower stalks as they die off to encourage new leaf growth.
Watch for slugs and apply appropriate treatments according to the package directions. A note of caution: slug bait can be highly toxic to pets and small animals, so are sure to keep it out of reach.
Hostas can be dug up in the early spring, divided in half, and replanted. In this manner, they keep producing more plants with a small amount of effort.
After dividing plants, be sure to fertilize and add extra mulch.
Although they are extremely hardy, Hostas are not invincible. They need a small amount of care to keep them looking their best. As one of the most frequently utilized plants for landscaping, Hostas will provide years worth of enjoyment. Tips for a Beautiful Garden?
