One of the perfect shade trees, The Tulip Tree (Liriodendron Tulipifera), is a native tree of North America. Sometimes referred to as Tulip Poplar, it is a member of the magnolia family.
The Tulip Tree has an extensive and tall build. Mature trees can reach between 70 to 90 feet tall and 40 feet wide. The Tulip Tree is an excellent addition to mid to large landscapes because it is so large. In addition, it looks lovely in many yards throughout the year.
You can expect your tulip tree to grow its leaves in early spring
Its leaves are enormous with four points. Then, in Autumn, the leaves of a Tulip Tree turn a lovely golden and make the perfect fall foliage tree for your yard.
Besides its leaves, a Tulip Tree is unique because of its one-of-a-kind, goblet-shaped flowers. Although it may take a Tulip Tree up to 20 years for its first flowers to bloom, they boast beautiful flowers shaped like tulips once they do. A Tulip Tree's flowers are a sight to behold with a white, green, and orange pattern. You can expect flowers to begin blooming from May to June. Plus, Flowers will bloom throughout spring and summer.
The Tulip Tree is a showstopper in large yards, plus they
are effortless to care for and require very little maintenance. The perfect place to grow a Tulip Tree is hardiness zones 4 to 9. They do best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil with no more than a pH level of 6.5.
When choosing a place for planting a Tulip Tree, it is best to pick an area that receives full to partial sunlight. If you plan to plant multiple trees in the same place, remember there should be 35 feet between each tree.
A young Tulip Tree may require some pruning. Plan to prune your young Tulip Tree from late fall to winter. Pruning is the best during this time because the tree is dormant.
