Facts About the American Sycamore Tree

The Sycamore Trees exfoliating bark provides another significant feature, making it easily identifiable. In mature trees, the bark peels back naturally to reveal cream-colored or green-tinged trunks. The plant's seed pods are also readily distinguishable. Clusters of two to seven seed balls emerge on trees in late summer, after the less significant flowers fade. The seed balls disintegrate and release small seeds, which are consumed by wildlife. In summer, this tall shade tree's broad leaves make it an attractive, and practical, addition to the landscape. The leaves are dark green and lobed with rough edges.

American Sycamore Trees Grows Fast and Gets Very Colorful In Fall

The Sycamore Trees does withstand urban pollutants and can thrive in urban areas. In southeastern regions of the United States, the tree does well in rain gardens or other areas with moisture. In the western United States, the California Sycamore also prefers humidity but will withstand drought once mature. As an indigenous plant, the tree's wood has been put to practical use by Native Americans and Europeans. The tree has a history of being used for canoes, musical instruments and building materials. Currently, the tree grows in both natural and planned landscapes. The beautiful American Sycamore Tree ("Planatus occidentalis") appeals to property owners as a source of shade and fine wood. This deciduous tree prefers river valleys, but will adapt well to yards and parks. Native to the Eastern half of North America, it possesses a distinctive appearance due to its naturally peeling bark, which produces impressive silvery-white tree trunks. Some ancient American Sycamore Trees attain heights upwards of 80 feet.
The trees achieve average heights in the low 30-foot range after two decades.

American Sycamore Trees  thrive in slightly acidic soils (pH ranges of 4.9 to 6.5)
