Side Oats Grama Grass

Sideoats grama is a native, warm-season, North American prairie grass. During the summer, it sports decorative purplish flowers resembling oats with dangling red anthers hanging down from arching stems. These turn into tarnish seed heads in the fall, while the surrounding foliage turns from blue-green to shades of red and purple.

With such ornamental qualities, it works well when planted with native wildflowers either in a more manicured garden bed or in a more naturalistic prairie setting. Sideoats grama reaches only two to three feet in height and has a bunching habit. Given its shortness, it is useful, together with other short native grasses like little bluestem. It is planting in wildflower gardens and prairie plantings where height is an issue, such as, for instance, in front yards. This characteristic also helps in showing off shorter wildflower species.

It can also serve as a useful wildlife plant. It is a host plant of several species of native skipper butterflies, and birds also eat its seeds. Planted with other native grasses and herbaceous prairie species, it provides excellent fodder for livestock. It is fairly drought resistant and can be grown in poorer soils, preferring dryer loamy, sandy, or rocky soils. It is hardy in USDA zones 3-9.
