Wild Ginger Plant Details

Because of their attractive foliage and other appealing features‚ wild ginger plants are popular landscape plants and prized for their use in herbal medicine

Wild Ginger plants are low-growing perennial groundcovers with heart-shaped leaves and hidden flowers of the genus Asarum․ Wild ginger is indeed a little secret of nature worth preserving‚ worth sharing, and worth using․ For the gardener‚ the herbalist‚ indeed for anyone who appreciates the detailed wonders of the natural world‚ wild ginger provides a link with the past‚ a gift of the present and a promise for the future․

According to Native American medicine‚ wild ginger was used as an important part of folk medicine

The root was used to make tonics that are given to cure ailments ranging from stomach ailments to sicknesses such as colds․ Wild ginger was used by many Native Americans for both culinary and spiritual purposes‚ used as a food additive and believed to have protective properties․ During the colonial period‚ wild ginger rhizomes were used as a substitute for ginger by those who could not obtain the spice from its home regions․ There is a long history of the knowledge of the power of wild ginger being adapted in various times and to the needs of different peoples‚ thus ensuring its transmission to later generations․

Wild Ginger is a shade thriving groundcover perennial

As a garden plant‚ wild ginger is quite attractive where its large green leaves provide contrast with the forest floor in shady locations‚ creating areas of attractive leaf texture and pattern on the ground․ The flowers‚ which are typically found at ground level‚ are small‚ inconspicuous‚ and often hidden․ Their unusual shapes and dull colors have a subtle beauty that makes wild ginger a good addition to the shaded moist areas of woodland gardens or as ground cover in lightly shaded beds beneath trees and other large shrubs․ When you decide to grow this plant in your home‚ you are not introducing merely a houseplant; you are introducing a beautiful piece of nature into its proper place․

One of these‚ the common wild ginger‚ Asarum canadense‚ is a perennial plant that is able to grow under a wide range of conditions‚ including a wide range of soil types and moisture levels or varieties of moisture availability․ In addition to its ornamental value as a groundcover with shiny‚ variegated foliage‚ Asarum canadensis is known for attracting bees and other helpful pollinators to the area․ Its floppy‚ sprawling leaves also provide a natural weed-suppression system‚ as they densely blanket the ground and outcompete other plants․ Wild ginger is not just pleasant to look at․ It can also create a habitat that preserves biodiversity and is hospitable to helpful wildlife․

This Perennial is Excellent For Bio-Diversity

When considering sustainable cultivation practices‚ it is important to note that wild ginger is a native species to the North American region and has been present in North American systems for hundreds to thousands of years․ Growing the plant helps reduce dependence on imported herbs and spices and encourages biodiversity․ Wild ginger has some of the simplest and least intrusive means of propagation‚ and as such has little negative impact on the ecosystem․ When cultivated well‚ wild ginger can be grown for years and years without disturbing wild populations․ Therefore‚ it is an excellent alternative for the environmentally-minded grower who wants to support their philosophies in the garden․

When the roots of the wild ginger are torn and crushed‚ there is an effluvium that escapes that is often noted as a pleasing spicy odor‚ similar to true ginger but with more of an earth-like smell․ The fragrance has uses as both a gardening and culinary herb‚ in herbal medicine‚ and as a flavoring in the kitchen․ The calming qualities of wild ginger make it well-suited to its use in making particular teas and syrups‚ as well as flavoring in savory dishes․ Thus‚ by using wild ginger‚ one can improve his culinary practice with its flavor and at the same time enjoy all of its health benefits․

In conclusion‚ wild ginger is far more than just another perennial

It is a signature plant that will bring nature‚ culture and sustainability to your life․ For its beauty‚ its historic and educational aspects‚ its conservation value and its aromatic nature‚ this plant deserves a place of honor in every botanist's life․ You're following a tradition and you're also looking forward and deciding to take a risk with the wild ginger by using it in the home landscape and using it in the kitchen!
