Quaking Aspen is a fast-growing native deciduous tree recognized for its golden autumnal color and distinctive white bark. It has wide, heart-shaped leaves and beautiful white bark. In the fall, its leaves change to gold, creating a beautiful fall display.

This tree is an excellent choice when planted as an accent tree in your yard or as a focal point in open woodlands. It is great for creating a living hedge or privacy screens. It can be planted in either full sun or partial shade. However, this tree performs best with the full six hours of sunlight.

Water your new tree thoroughly when it is first planted until it is well established. Make sure to water it during drought, as this tree has a low level of drought tolerance, especially during the hot summer months.

This tree does not have ornamental flowers. Rather, it has small catkins that are not showy but interesting, with long wisps of white hairs and red stamens.

This tree does have a thinner, ornamental bark, so watch closely for signs of insect damage and treat as soon as possible. Prune any damaged, rubbing, or diseased branches to limit fungal or bacterial spread.

This tree is very attractive to plenty of wildlife, including birds and deer. Protect your new tree while it is young with caging or fencing in order to avoid damage from animal browsing. It is a host plant for many local butterflies, including the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.

How to Grow and Care for Bare Root Trees

Bare root trees are shipped dormant without soil, making them lightweight, cost-effective, and easy to plant during the cool months of early spring or fall. To begin, soak the roots in a bucket of water for 4–6 hours before planting to rehydrate them. Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil and ample space for the tree’s mature size.

Dig a hole twice as wide as the spread of the roots and deep enough to keep the root flare (where the roots begin to spread from the trunk) at or slightly above ground level. Create a small mound of soil in the center of the hole, spread the roots evenly over it, backfill with native soil, and gently tamp down to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting.

Keep the soil consistently moist (not soggy) during the first growing season, and apply mulch around the base—avoiding direct contact with the trunk—to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Stake the tree if necessary, and prune only to remove dead or damaged branches. With proper care, your bare root tree will establish quickly and grow strong for years to come.
