The Chinese Snowball Viburnum is a robust and hardy shrub commonly planted in woodland gardens or as part of a mixed shrub border. It is native to Southeastern China but grows well across North America. It has large dinnerplate snowballs and is an old Southern favorite when there were plantation homes across the southern part of the US.

Reaching heights of 10 ft, it has a round canopy developed across a fountain-like emergence of stems. It produces impressive flowers similar to that of a hydrangea. Its tall stature along with beautiful leaves and showy flowers make it a stately addition to your garden.

The leaves of this shrub are oval in shape and fibrous. They are olive-green and are slightly papery and rough to the touch. The leaves are finely toothed and similar in shape to a maple leaf. It is a deciduous shrub and it presents pinky-red color transitions as the leaves senesce.

The Chinese Snowball Viburnum produces enormous flowers, reaching 8 in in diameter. The bloom emerges in late spring as a pale, limey green and matures to plush, globous, bright white clusters. The flowers are sterile and do not produce any fruit. However, they do attract a host of pollinators when in bloom.

How to Grow and Care for Bare Root Shrubs

Bare root shrubs are a budget-friendly and efficient way to plant during the cooler months when they’re dormant. Before planting, soak the roots in water for 3–6 hours to rehydrate them. Choose a site with the appropriate light exposure for the species—most flowering shrubs prefer full to partial sun. Dig a hole wide enough to spread out the roots and deep enough so the crown (where the roots meet the stems) sits level with the soil surface.

Mound a bit of soil at the bottom of the hole, spread the roots over it, and backfill with native soil while gently firming it to remove air pockets. Water deeply after planting to settle the roots. Keep the soil moist but not soggy during the first growing season to encourage healthy establishment.

Mulch around the base (not touching the stems) to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly to remove any broken branches and to shape after the first flush of growth. With minimal care, bare root shrubs will leaf out beautifully and grow into reliable, long-term landscape anchors.
