Blue Joint Grass (Calamagrostis canadensis)
Blue Joint Grass: Calamagrostis canadensis, also called Blue Joint Grass or Purple Small Reed, is a perennial, cool-season ornamental grass species that will flourish across most of the colder USDA plant hardiness zones. It prefers a spot in the garden where it can bask in the full sunshine and lasts for a long growing season.
Calamagrostis canandensis is a native of eastern Europe and Eurasia. However, it is now well-adjusted to North America's coolest growing regions.
Blue joint grass forms attractive clumps and spreads by its roots--and quickly. In addition, some TN Nursery gardeners let it go to seed in the autumn to speed up that process.
You will see small birds and mammals foraging and enjoying their windfall find as the blustery fall winds scatter the seeds. They are highly nutritious, especially as birds begin to see food scarcity after the end of summer.
The Blue Joint Grass Flowing Appearance
The blades of this beautiful ornamental grass species are green, flat, and slender, with a slightly rough texture. Each cluster grows as tall as five feet and have a three-foot spread.
The flowers form into feathery plumes that appear on tall spikes of grass, oblong in shape and about seven inches long. They are present as purple or dark blue in the late summer and fade to a lighter or golden tan later in the season.
The flowers produce small, rounded seed pods that hold tiny grass seeds to help promote the reproduction of the species.
