There are many kinds of hair grass, but the dwarf versions are quite popular among fish aquarium keepers. Dwarf hair grass (Eleocharis parvula) has runners that propagate very quickly, creating a thick carpet of grass in which fish can spawn, and their babies can hide. Its motion in the water gives off a seaweed-like vibe.
This grass grows either fully or partially submerged in water that is between 70 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit. It likes a neutral pH and a little bit of a soft substrate, rich in fertilizer. It also prefers two watts of light per gallon or more of water. The color temperature should be between 5000 and 7000 Kelvin.
Hair grass often makes the difference between an acceptable looking aquarium and an aquarium that looks professional. One way it does this is by “remembering” haircuts. So, if you trim some of it short before you plant it, that section of your grass won’t ever grow to be very long, and you will have a multi-length lawn.
You may wish to put long-length grass in the back of your aquarium and shorter grass in the front. Alternatively, you could put longer grass in the end and use it sparsely toward the front as a softening tool for your accent pieces. Place clumps of it around the edges of rocks, near other plants, and so on.
