The Benefits Of Landscaping With Garden Moss
Moss is a charming addition to gardens, lawns, and landscapes, with mellow colors and soft textures that lend any space a lush and peaceful atmosphere. It's also easy to grow and maintain and thrive in areas that aren't as suitable for other plants.
Garden Moss is a Charming Addition to Gardens, Lawns and Landscapes for a Lush and Peaceful Atmosphere
Many types of moss favor compacted clay soil with higher acidity levels and thrive in shady areas. Its naturally-occurring presence is a good indicator of soil type, which is one reason gardeners have used it for centuries to help monitor and regulate quality and moisture levels. It's great for spots that catch a lot of water and don't drain easily because it can absorb excess water like a sponge, so it'll keep those areas of the soil from becoming bare and muddy helps to prevent erosion. Once you have it growing in your garden, it can also benefit the ground by storing more water and nutrients and encouraging the growth of neighboring plants. It requires comparatively little maintenance watering compared to grass lawns and other plants, and can better tolerate dry stretches.
Getting It Started
Moss attaches itself to a home surface with little threads instead of a root system and directly takes moisture and nutrients through its leaf structure. This makes it well-suited to damp and shady areas of your garden and makes it easy to transplant. It can be placed on smooth surfaces and weed-free areas of stable soil, and it will grow and spread with regular initial watering. Depending on the variety you work with, it can be used nearly anywhere: as ground cover, patched on or between sections of stonework, or around garden ponds and waterfalls.
Caring For Your Moss
As long as it gets enough initial watering to grow and spread, and some sunlight to photosynthesize, garden moss requires very little maintenance, making it as relaxing as it looks. It doesn't need extensive watering, mowing, or fertilizing: you can help it by keeping leaves, and other debris brushed off the surface, so they don't block out air circulation and sunlight, and weeding when needed.
