3 of The Best Ferns To Grow For Beginner Gardens
Three of the best ferns to grow for beginner gardens are Christmas ferns, ostrich ferns, & lady ferns. You may be wondering what exactly these three types of ferns are. Let me tell you a little about these, so you can decide which of these is right for you, if not all of them.
First off, we have Christmas ferns. This is a gorgeous evergreen fern that can grow throughout the USDA hardiness zones of 3 to 9. It requires excellent, shaded, damp soil to grow and thrive. They have a moderate growth rate. The maturity height of Christmas ferns is between 1 to 3 feet. Surprisingly, the width for this fern is just the same as its height. It has evergreen, adaptable, & glossy; showy foliage looks about it. It's a beautiful fern all year around. It would make a beautiful additive to any landscaping idea that you may have.
Let's move on to the ostrich fern. They grow well throughout the hardiness zones 3 to 7. These ferns should also be planted in a shallow hole in the ground, with a lot of room for roots to spread about. Make sure the crown sits atop the soil. The ostrich ferns require heavy clay soil & require a lot of moisture. They also needed to be in a partially shaded area. These types of ferns can grow anywhere between 3 to 6 feet tall. Ostrich ferns tend to grow pretty fast as well. It's an excellent fern for any garden! With this beautiful fern's blue/green foliage, I would love to make a home in your garden with you.
The lady fern can grow throughout the hardiness zones 4 to 8. Lady ferns also need to be planted in loamy soil and a little more on the acidic side. Soil needs to be well-drained as well, so the roots do not rot. These ferns can grow anywhere between 3 to 5 feet tall. They are slow growers, but they look almost elegant, so of course, they take their time. Their stalks can be green, purple, or red; the leaves are bright green and have a lacy texture. Lady ferns can bring elegance into any garden.
